Drug Addiction - Information on Amphetamines
Writen by Marcus Essex
Amphetamines, more commonly known by their slang names ’speed’ or ‘Billy whiz’ come in a white powder form which can be made soluble and injected, occasionally inhaled, but more often than not swallowed. Amphetamines are prescribed as a stimulant which increase ones alertness both mentally and physically. In correct medically prescribed usage they are used to treat a variety of conditions, such as varying degrees of narcolepsy and also young children which suffer from ADD, Attention Deficit Disorder. In the past, in stronger doses, they also were used to treat people who suffered from severe depression.
For those who take amphetamines the desired effect of the drug is to give the user a quick energy boost, postponing the need for sleep and countering drowsiness. Inevitably because the body is forced to stay awake and active longer, when the drug starts to wear off, the user will find themselves becoming rapidly fatigued but still may find themselves having a difficult time relaxing and sleeping until the drug has worn off completely.
The side effects are the inability to sleep, loss of appetite and pupil dilation. Amphetamines are a very dangerous drug which can make the user psychologically dependant, and put the users at many risks including heart and circulatory damage. Mentally they can produce paranoia and distortions of reality, even to the point of been hallucinations.
