Crack Addiction: No Longer A ‘Cheap’ High

Writen by Bill Urell

Crack addiction affects people of all ages throughout the United States. The number of people suffering from crack addiction continues to rise, in part, because supporting a crack addiction is initially relatively inexpensive. That makes it easy to get hooked. Unfortunately, crack is highly addictive, making it very easy to develop a crack addiction even for someone who want to try it ‘just once.’

Crack addiction is also on the rise because it is the ‘poor man’s’ version of the powdered form of cocaine, which is very expensive. Crack addiction does not, however, only affect poor or lower class people. Crack addiction crosses all races, classes, and socio-economic backgrounds. No matter the background or social status, a person who develops a crack addiction finds it to be nearly impossible to stop and recover from the crack addiction.

Crack addiction can result in a whole array of physical problems. One physical problem that can result from crack addiction is an increase in heart rate and blood pressure. Crack addiction can also cause the eyes to become dilated, anxiety, and a decrease in mental alertness and clarity. In addition, crack addiction can cause hot and cold flashes and sleeplessness. Eventually it often leads to paranoia and psychosis.

A person coping with a crack addiction will ultimately develop a tolerance to crack. This makes it more difficult for the person suffering from a crack addiction to get high. Therefore, he has to take increasingly larger amounts of crack. The initial low cost now becomes less of a factor because the overall amount used continues to increase.

Yet, crack addiction is treatable. A crack addiction treatment program can help a crack addict recover from crack addiction when he is ready to be helped. Usually, the most difficult part of recovering from a crack addiction is the pain, both physical and psychological, associated with crack withdrawal.

For this reason, it is important for a person receiving crack addiction treatment to do more than go through a detoxification process. The person suffering from a crack addiction also needs to learn how to handle temptation and how to handle problems without turning to crack for help. The person then needs guidance and support after receiving treatment for a crack addiction to ensure he puts his newly learned skills to use. Engagement in long term continuing care and lifestyle change is neede to insure any degree of success.

Crack addiction is potentially fatal, but through qualified, professional help, the chances of recovery are incresed.

Addiction and Anger - Own One, Control the Other

Writen by John Fisher

Addiction is as most people already know a disease. One which is not curable but can be treatable. The substance(s) we choose are but one small part of the illness, there are many things that effect, increase and support our addiction. Owning personal responsibility for each thing that affects our illness removes the blame and denial. Here I will address just a couple of these issues briefly. Things which I have struggled with personally and can say that I have trained myself to the point where they, while still present in my life no longer control actions or decisions causing me to use.

Lets discuss one of the most predominate emotional excuse makers of any addict recovering or active-anger. I used to continually blame my anger on a source, such as a person, place or thing. My thought (and statement) used to be, “They really made me angry when they said or did that.” Today I have learned that if I consciously accept responsibility for my anger that I no longer can use it as an excuse to stay angry and let it grow into something dysfunctional. My statement now is-(What di I do to allow that person or incident to make me angry.” It’s not about someone or something else it’s about me. Even if someone or something is totally wrong in how it affects me I am the one who is allowing it to affect me.

If you think this idea is bogus I challenge you to try it out, not for one day or a week but for a long enough period of time that it becomes almost automatic. I think you find so much relief from the stress and game playing it will give you enough freedom to work on other aspects of your life. And guess what? The same process works with anything we do. Own responsibility for yourself and you will stop being responsible for others burdens we have enough of our own. Simply said difficult to do, but if you truly want to embrace recovery it is necessary.

Also, remember in the process of seeking freedom from the slavery of addiction we will all fail and make mistakes. It is not the mistake that is made that’s important it is what we do afterward that is important. The true definition of insanity is making the same mistake over and over again and expecting a different result. So at least attempt to make the next mistake different from the last one.

One last little thing this time around, we all have problems big and small and addicts love to let great big piles of them gang up on us all at once. Here is a simple philosophy that could help you if you will apply it to your life. “Now is all there is, it was now five minutes ago it will be now five minutes from now. How many problems can you have in that one brief instant of time called now? Only one deal with it!

habit addiction

Habit = Addiction?

Writen by Jhalak Jerajani

The oxford dictionary defines habit as a settled or regular tendency or practice or alternatively an addiction to drugs. Ok that was what the books told us, but lets see what I understood of the word habit, Habit is word or tendency such that when I remove the starting letter from it (i.e. H), I still have a-bit, if I remove the next letter (i.e. A), I am still left with bit, when I remove the next letter from that, I am left with it, I still keeping having it, now in my desperate attempt I remove the next letter from that (i.e. I), I am still left with T, i.e. tea or coffee whatever you prefer. So habit is one such word so well defined in the English literature that it doesn’t make you feel like an addict nor does it sound insulting, an extremely polite way of saying, Yes, I am addicted to something.

Many people, including my clients keep asking me, How can I differentiate between a habit and an addiction? Well the answer is very simple, you can’t, and you just can’t differentiate between a habit and an addiction. They both mean exactly the same. Socially or rather politically, the word habit is considered to be more polite than the word addiction. In most cases, if not in all, habits are formed unknowingly and people involuntarily get habituated. Now why did I say that? Well in most cases you never understand your body and why is it demanding something. You just do it because your body demands it.

Accepting that you are addicted is the only way to conquering your fears. You need to realize, not assume, what you are habituated to. Getting rid of an addiction or a habit starts from knowing your body, understanding its needs. Bringing discipline in your life, is a more practical way to word it. You need to know that your body is not like any other machine that processes your food, but is way much more complex. You need to balance your sleep hours, eating habits, and recreation timings.

Loosing your addiction or habits is only half success, but maintaining it for life is your final success. So once you have won yourself against addiction, it is very important to maintain this victory. The key element that would keep you going on in this battle is that fact that you love yourself and you love your life. Boys like their toys and girls like their boys, a phrase that displays relation betweens the oddest of elements. Raising the bar is a very good thing, as humans are competitive but one must know when and where the word enough, in their line of life. You may not be the best but you are not bad either.

So, let me end this one here by saying, be in control of yourself and your life. They just give you one life, so don’t let any habit manipulate it cause this is one place you never get a second chance.
